On-device vs cloud video upscaling

Every video upscaler belongs to one of two architectures: your footage is either processedwhere it already is (on your device) or somewhere else (on a company's servers). That single design choice decides the privacy, speed, offline behavior, and real cost of the tool — before any comparison of AI quality even starts.

What actually happens when you use a cloud upscaler

When you drop a clip into a web-based or cloud-backed enhancement tool, the pipeline looks like this:

  1. Upload. The full-resolution file travels to the provider's servers. For phone video this is often gigabytes.
  2. Storage. The file sits on their infrastructure at least for the duration of processing — and, depending on the terms of service, possibly longer for "service improvement," caching, or moderation.
  3. Processing. A shared GPU queue enhances the footage. Busy hours mean waiting.
  4. Download. The enhanced (larger) file travels back to you.

None of this is automatically sinister — reputable providers document retention windows and delete files on schedule. But it is a real exposure surface: you are trusting a third party's security, their employees' access controls, and terms of service that can change. For a family archive that might be acceptable. For unreleased creator content, client work under NDA, or anything intimate, it usually is not.

What on-device upscaling changes

On-device tools run the neural network on the phone's own GPU and Neural Engine. In Video Upscaler 16K, models like Real-ESRGAN, BSRGAN, Apple SuperRes, and MetalFX execute locally — video processing can run offline after the original is downloaded. There is no upload step to wait for, no server to trust, no account to create, and the same clip processed twice costs the provider nothing — which is why unlimited free conversions are possible at all.

The honest trade-off

Cloud platforms can deploy models too large for any phone, and for extreme restoration jobs (badly damaged archival film, forensic-grade enlargement) a desktop or server tool may still win. The point is not that cloud is always worse — it is that for the footage people actually shoot and share from a phone, on-device models close most of the quality gap while being an option for keeping video processing local. Choose the architecture first, then the tool.

Rule of thumb: if losing control of the footage would bother you — client work, unreleased content, family moments, anything private — the upload is the risk, no matter how good the enhancement is. Details in our guide: how to upscale video on iPhone without the cloud.

Frequently asked questions

Which enhancement model should I choose?

MetalFX resizes clear footage quickly. Apple SuperRes is a fast option for everyday videos and requires iOS 26 or later. Try Real-ESRGAN for edges and textures, or BSRGAN for soft, noisy or compressed footage. These two premium models take longer; compare a short sample before processing a long video.

Are my videos uploaded? Does processing work offline?

Video upscaling, conversion and editing run on your device without uploading the video for processing. Download iCloud-only files first. Purchases, restoring a subscription and some optional services need internet access. AI metadata suggestions may send metadata and analysis results to an online service when local generation is unavailable.

What is free, and what needs premium access?

Free conversions use MetalFX or, where available, Apple SuperRes with SD, HD and 2K presets. BSRGAN, Real-ESRGAN and 4K, 8K or 16K exports need premium access. The app shows the current subscription, export-pack and promotional options before purchase.
