How to upscale video on iPhone
Most "video enhancer" tools work the same way: you upload your footage to someone's server, wait in a queue, and download the result. That is a problem if the clip is personal, unreleased, or client work. This guide shows the other way — upscaling video entirely on the iPhone itself, so the file never leaves your hand.
What you need
- An iPhone or iPad on iOS 18 or later. Processing time depends on the chip, model, resolution and video length.
- The Video Upscaler 16K & Converter app — free to install, unlimited free conversions with the built-in fast models.
- A video worth improving: an old family clip, a compressed download, a soft social media video, or low-resolution camera footage.
Step by step
Open the app and select a video
Tap Select Video. You can pull a clip from the Photos library, import from the Files app (including iCloud Drive), or record something new with the camera.
Choose the output quality
Pick a preset: SD, HD, 2K, 4K, 8K, or 16K. For old phone footage and social clips, HD or 4K is usually the sweet spot — choose based on the source resolution and available storage. The 4K, 8K and 16K presets require premium access.
Pick an AI model
MetalFX is free and fast. Apple SuperRes is also free where available, on iOS 26 or later. BSRGAN and Real-ESRGAN (PRO) reconstruct the most detail — best for badly compressed or very soft footage.
Optionally trim, crop, or filter
Tap the video to open the editor if you want to cut a section, fix orientation, adjust speed, or apply color before upscaling.
Convert — on the device
Tap Convert and watch the progress bar. Video frames are processed locally. Download any iCloud-only originals first. Keep the app open until conversion finishes.
Compare and export
Use the before/after comparison to check the result, then save to Photos or share directly to Messages, AirDrop, or your editing app.
Why on-device instead of a cloud upscaler?
Cloud tools have their place — but uploading footage has real costs: your video sits on a third-party server under that company's terms of service, upload time scales with file size, and nothing works offline. On-device processing means privacy by default (the file physically stays on the phone), no accounts, no queues, and speed that depends only on your own hardware. We wrote a full comparison here: on-device vs cloud video upscaling.
Honest expectations: what AI upscaling can and can't do
Upscaling reconstructs plausible detail — it does not recover information that was never recorded. You will get the best results on footage that is soft, compressed, or downscaled: old phone videos, WhatsApp/Telegram-compressed clips, DVD-era footage, screen recordings. Heavy motion blur, severe low-light noise, or out-of-focus shots improve less, because the source detail simply is not there. Compare a short sample at the same zoom before committing to a long conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always choose 8K or 16K?
No. Choose a resolution that suits the source and the screen where you will watch it. Larger exports need more time, memory and storage. Upscaling can make detail look clearer, but it cannot reliably recover detail that was never recorded. Device and codec limits may prevent very large exports.
Are my videos uploaded? Does processing work offline?
Video upscaling, conversion and editing run on your device without uploading the video for processing. Download iCloud-only files first. Purchases, restoring a subscription and some optional services need internet access. AI metadata suggestions may send metadata and analysis results to an online service when local generation is unavailable.
Which video formats can I use?
Import videos that iOS can decode from Photos or Files. MP4, MOV and M4V are common choices; the codec inside the file also matters. Export formats are MP4, MOV and M4V. Renaming an unsupported file does not convert it to a supported format.
What is free, and what needs premium access?
Free conversions use MetalFX or, where available, Apple SuperRes with SD, HD and 2K presets. BSRGAN, Real-ESRGAN and 4K, 8K or 16K exports need premium access. The app shows the current subscription, export-pack and promotional options before purchase.
Why is conversion slow or my device warm?
Every frame is processed on your device. Long clips, high resolutions and premium models need more work. Keep the app open while converting. Try a shorter clip, a lower resolution or MetalFX, and let the device cool down if it becomes hot. Processing time varies with the device and the video.
